Ryan’s Rehab Story

Ryan, 34, from Belfast has been trying to face up to his issues with alcohol for the past few years. “I knew my drinking was getting out of hand but I hadn’t realised how bad things had got until I lost my family,” Ryan says, “My girlfriend had been really patient but she wanted a better life for us and I just drank it all away,” he says.

Ryan’s girlfriend told him that if he didn’t get help, she was going to leave him and take their 6-month-old daughter with her. Ryan didn’t believe her and carried on drinking, but two weeks after she had left, the true meaning of the situation hit him hard. “It was so quiet in the house. I had no one to talk to. When Jenna left and took the baby, I just fell apart.

“I knew I’d hit a wall and needed to make a positive change for the better. I called Port of Call a week later and they were amazing. They listened to me for ages. The adviser was really patient and talked me through a number of options available.”

Ryan was booked into a residential treatment clinic just outside Belfast and spent the next few weeks going through detox and coming to terms with his dependency issues. “It really did change my whole outlook on life. To be free of wanting to drink is so liberating. I can’t thank Port of Call enough for their guidance and support,” Ryan says.
